You’ve just found the best little amateur theatre company in all England.
The Old Groynes Theatre Company, Huntingfield
The Old Groynes Theatre Company was the inspiration of Stephen Harrison (then resident in Huntingfield). He composed some short stories for his daughter Olivia, about the adventures of Arthur Frean back in 2015. ‘Arthur Frean’ are Stephen’s middle names….so the stories were a way of telling his young daughter tales about her father’s early life.
One of the stories written for Olivia was a magical mystery Arthur Frean and the Huntingfield Sausagerous which later became the first pantomime performance of the Old Groynes Theatre Company in 2017
The Old Groynes name is taken from on an old sign on Southwold beach telling swimmers to ‘Beware of the Old Groynes’ – it seemed appropriate somehow!
The second pantomime performance of the Old Groynes Theatre Company in 2018 was The Great Huntingfield Brain Robbery written by Ken Burnett, followed by a short Children’s Christmas play Oops! Someone’s Stolen Santa’s Sleigh. And Rudolph! also by Ken.
The Old Groynes Theatre Company has been a great community social success bringing so many villagers together. Creating and performing ‘plays’ is a very inclusive activity and very demanding on people’s time requiring commitment over several months for each performance. It requires not only people prepared to be on stage but many others to help with lighting, sound systems, stage design, costumes, marketing and selling tickets….and more. All are indispensable parts of the Old Groynes.
